Front Suspension Rebuild

The following VFAQs were created to help people rebuild their front ends of their Mercedes W123 chassis. As always remember the lovely legal disclaimer that I do not accept any liability for yours or anyone’s actions who may follow any of my guides.

This page will expand in time, at the moment the only thing I've done to my 83 is what can be done without a spring compressor, perhaps next year I'll have a full section on what to do, but until then....

Idler Arm
Lower Ball Joint
Guide Rod Mounts
Sway Bar Bushings (CS)
Upper Control Arm

If you are having problems and want to pinpoint what is causing it then it is time to push pull and pry everything. If you turn the wheel side to side and it moves freely a little bit it is tierods, if the right (from inside vehicle) wheel moves a little with muscle as well as the tierod arm then it needs the idler arm rebuilt, if it moves on top to bottom movement upon hard pulling or prying then it needs either a ball joint or work to the upper control arm. I don't think you can feel the upper bushings being bad like this by hand since the sway bar is fighting it, so those are visual or prying only. However by just looking at them you should be able to see a good deal of what is wrong. Ball joints are also known to squeak when going over bumps, look for torn boots on them. If you hear a rattle in back your rear sway bar may need new sway bar links. New to me is when my front right side started squeaking my upper control arm bushings needed replacing, this is when I took all of this on.
